Terrifying Tessellations

Platform: PC

In this lesson, students will experiment with transformations in the plane using Geometer's Sketchpad®. They will make formal geometric constructions by designing reptiles whose areas are equal to that of the underlying hexagons they are contained in. Then students will tessellate the plane with these reptiles using translations. Through experimentation students will learn why some regular polygons tessellate and some do not.
