The Project Description

This project promotes health literacy and supports awareness of global health issues, through the exploration of how to make sound nutritional choices about the foods we eat for breakfast. The example project shown here was created using Excel 2008; however, any spreadsheet application would work just as well. We will be creating a spreadsheet to track and compare three breakfast menus. We will begin by searching for and evaluating Web resources about nutrition. After we input nutritional data into our spreadsheet, we will compare the nutritional value of different choices through the use of graphs and charts.

Infusing 21st Century Skills       back to top
The example project created in the tutorials illustrates one way this project might be completed, using subject-specific content, targeted for a certain grade range, and using a specific application. As demonstrated, this would make a fine technology skills integration project for your pupils. However, the basic project can be easily extended to more fully support the teaching and learning of other 21st century concepts and skills, beyond those related to technology.
A stated Performance Indicator of a 21st Century teacher is the ability to "customise and personalise learning activities to address pupils' diverse learning styles, working strategies, and abilities using digital tools and resources" (ISTE NETS•T 2c). The Project Activity Guide and The Professional Development Workbook, included in the downloadable Project Resource Packet, will help you practice this critical skill by guiding you through the process of modifying the example project to infuse 21st century skills, to help you adjust the project to suit your own classroom needs, and to assess the end result.
The following tutorials address ways you might adapt the basic project, as well as provide examples of how the project can be extended to more fully incorporate specific 21st century concepts. Please note that these suggestions may involve using Web resources that are blocked or filtered by your school or organisation.
