Tech Integration Project
Lesson Accelerator: Project Overview

Pamphlet Fun
Software Type: Word Processing/Page Layout
The example project created in this Lesson Accelerator addresses NETS Performance Indicators for middle grades as used in a(n) Health curriculum. It could also be used with older learners or adapted for lower grades. See the section on Extending and Adapting at the bottom of this page for ideas on how to use this same project for different subjects, grades, and skill levels.
Project Launchers
Lesson Accelerator Project Launcher pages contain video tutorials that show you, step-by-step, how to create this project using specific software applications, as well as a movie showing you what the finished project looks like. They also provide a download of all the example files used in the project, so you can recreate it.

Description
Students will work individually or in groups to create a bi-fold pamphlet on a health issue. Students may use the information provided for the example project to create a pamphlet, or they may select a health issue to research, then organize that information and enter it into their pamphlet. Students will include a description of the health issue, symptoms, causes, prevention and treatment. Students can also include any other interesting information they find about the health issue.
Goals
To provide students the opportunity to research a health related issue, organize the information and present it in a bi-fold pamphlet form.
Objectives
The student will be able to:
  • Use a variety of print and Internet resources to collect information about their chosen health issue.
  • Organize their data.
  • Set up a word processing document for a bi-fold pamphlet.
  • Enter information into the pamphlet.
Preparation and Skill Mastery
Students will need time to research information on their health issue, if they are going to create a pamphlet different from the example project. The teacher may want to require information to be included with the example project information, such as a description of the health issue, sign and symptoms, cause, treatment and prevention. In the example project, a section for "Other Information" is also included. Students could use this category to include any other interesting information that they find on this health issue. Students will need to know how to use the information that they have found without plagiarizing.
Materials
  • A computer with word-processing software installed.
  • Access to the example project text found at the end of this document.
  • Resource materials (print, online) for researching health related issues.
  • A printer (optional).
Task List
The tasks to be completed for this project include:
  • Choosing a health related issue to research, if completing a pamphlet about something other than the example topic.
  • Researching the issue, including description, symptoms, cause, prevention, and treatment.
  • Organizing information in paragraph form.
  • Setting up the word-processing document page for a bi-fold pamphlet.
  • Entering the information into the pamphlet.
  • Printing and presenting the finished product, as directed by the instructor.
Assessment
Assessment can be based on the following:
  • Does the information provided in the pamphlet include a description, symptoms, cause, prevention, and treatment of the health issue?
  • Has the student presented the information in an interesting and engaging way?
  • Is the word-processing document set up with the correct margins to create a bi-fold pamphlet?
Extending or Adapting
Here are some possible ways that this lesson plan might be extended or adapted for different timeframes, grade levels, and skill/ability levels:
  • This project can be easily adapted to fit a different subject or curricular area. The instructor can choose a topic that is appropriate for the subject being discussed in class or ask students to research a topic of their own choosing.
  • The project could include less text and more image content for younger students or ESL students.
  • The pamphlet can be expanded to include more pages or more complex content, such as bringing in charts or graphs created in other applications.
