Atomic Learning Online Training Implemented in South Carolina’s Office of eLearning

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

LITTLE FALLS, MN – March 3, 2008 – The South Carolina Department of Education Office of eLearning has built a partnership with Atomic Learning, award-winning provider of technology instruction, to provide Web-based software training to eLearning students and educators throughout the state of South Carolina.

The mission of the Office of eLearning is to develop and deliver standards-based, student-centered online instruction to expand educational opportunities and 21st century schools. The Office of eLearning believes that high-quality education is possible for all students and educators in all locations and offers an innovative, standards-based online curriculum to expand educational opportunities and improve 21st century skills. To achieve these goals, teachers in South Carolina take online assessments to determine their technology ability levels, receive individualized professional development recommendations, and upload electronic portfolios with sample lessons, student work, and assessment instruments. Currently a similar online system is being developed for students.

In order to provide the resources needed for teachers and students, The Office of eLearning will integrate their online ePortfolio System with the Atomic Learning training tutorials that provide training on over 110 applications, such as Microsoft Office, Appleworks, Adobe Photoshop and many more. Along with software training, Atomic Learning also offers technology-infused lesson plans and professional development workshops on topics such as designing newsletters, blogging and Web 2.0.

Dee Appleby, Director of the South Carolina Office of eLearning, says, "The challenge facing America’s schools is the empowerment of all children to function effectively in their future, a future marked increasingly with change, information growth, and evolving technologies. Technology is a powerful tool with enormous potential for paving high-speed highways from outdated educational systems to systems capable of providing learning opportunities for all, to better serve the needs of 21st century work, communications, learning, and life.”

The South Carolina Department of Education Office of eLearning vision is to lead online education by working collaboratively with high schools, educators, and divisions to offer the highest quality online instruction available. South Carolina educators and students will have access to Atomic Learning’s library of tutorials and resources 24 hour a day, seven days a week, for professional development opportunities, school projects and homework and for personal growth.
