Tech Integration Project
Lesson Accelerator: Project Overview

Painting Light & Shadow
Software Type: Presentation
The example project created in this Lesson Accelerator addresses NETS Performance Indicators for middle grades as used in a(n) Fine Arts curriculum. It could also be used with older learners or adapted for lower grades. See the section on Extending and Adapting at the bottom of this page for ideas on how to use this same project for different subjects, grades, and skill levels.
Project Launchers
Lesson Accelerator Project Launcher pages contain video tutorials that show you, step-by-step, how to create this project using specific software applications, as well as a movie showing you what the finished project looks like. They also provide a download of all the example files used in the project, so you can recreate it.
When you've reviewed all the information on this page and would like to go to a Project Launcher, click the application name below that corresponds to the one you'd like to use for the project.
Description
Students will be creating a multimedia presentation that uses text, clip art, images, animation, and hyperlinks. They will learn how to create a new presentation, choose a slide design, and add content to their slides. The example presentation focuses on the great French Impressionists: Renoir, Monet, and Manet. However, the project can be easily adapted to presentation information about any subject under study. The example project provides an excellent introduction to the basic tools available in a presentation application.
Goals
To gain experience using presentation software to create an effective and interesting presentation about the subject under study.
Objectives
The student will be able to:
  • Create a new presentation and choose a unifying slide design.
  • Add and edit text on the slides.
  • Locate appropriate images and clip art online.
  • Add animation to text and graphics to add interest.
  • Add hyperlinks on a reference slide.
  • Present the finished slide show.
Preparation and Skill Mastery
Students should have mastered basic computer skills, such as opening and closing applications, using input devices (keyboard, mouse, etc.) and saving documents to a personal directory or folder. If students will be completing a presentation about something other than French Impressionists, they will need to choose a topic of study and complete their research before beginning this project.
Materials
  • A computer with presentation software installed
  • Access to the Internet for online image search
  • Access to the images provided for the example project, or suitable images they have located themselves
Task List
The tasks to be completed for this project include:
  • Creating a new presentation document and choosing a slide design.
  • Adding title and subtitle text.
  • Adding additional slides and choosing appropriate slide layouts.
  • Adding text, images, clip art, and animation to the slides.
  • Previewing the presentation.
Assessment
Assessment can be based on the following:
  • Was the student able to create a new presentation and choose a unifying slide design?
  • Was the student able to add appropriate content to the slides?
  • If the student researched his or her own topic, was the information accurate and compelling?
  • Was the student able to present the slide show to the class and participate in class discussion about the presentation?
Extending or Adapting
Here are some possible ways that this lesson plan might be extended or adapted for different timeframes, grade levels, and skill/ability levels:
  • The subject matter of the presentation can be adapted to fit any subject currently under study. For example: Music students may create slides about a specific composer or music genre.
  • The type and amount of content can be easily adapted to fit the skill levels of younger students, students with physical disabilities, or language-challenged students. A presentation could be created that contains just images, or the amount of text could be limited to short phrases or sentences. Combining descriptive words with representative graphics is an excellent way for ESL students to strengthen their language skills.
