Average Kid
Application: Excel 2004
Platform: Mac

Description

The process for creating the example spreadsheet using Microsoft® Excel 2004 is described below. The Completed Project Movie shows what the finished product might look like. The tutorial movies that follow demonstrate, step-by-step, how to construct the "Average Kid" spreadsheet using the sample data provided in the downloadable resource packet. This project can be easily modified or adapted for other subjects where students might wish to find the averages and compare values in recorded sets of data. For a complete project description, including goals, objectives, and materials, see the Project Overview.

Creating Your Own Project
We will begin by creating a new spreadsheet in Microsoft Excel. We will learn how to add and format column and row labels. Then, we'll record the measurement data that has been collected into the appropriate cells. We will add formulas for calculating the average value for each body measurement, and then we'll add formulas for comparing and counting how many students have a measurement that is greater than or less than the class average. We'll also learn how to print out the data that has been recorded in our spreadsheet.
