Developing Tutorials for Atomic Learning

Atomic Learning has been in the education market since 2000, providing online technology training primarily to the K-12 education sector. While the majority of our customers are K-12 school districts, we also have a substantial number of college and university customers. To better serve people in higher education institutions, we have created a higher education-specific version of Atomic Learning. It features much of the same content that is on our current site, but with a look and feel more appropriate for higher education. We will also be adding additional training on applications that are mainly used at the college and university level.

Atomic Learning has always used a blend of full time content developers and independent contractors to create the tutorial movies that comprise the core of our content. Our contract developers are people who work in education or technology related jobs. They contract with us to create tutorial movies as a way to supplement their incomes and share their knowledge with a worldwide audience. We are currently looking for people who have a good working knowledge of specific higher education applications whom we could contract with to develop tutorial movies. Contracts cover the period of time it takes to create a series of movies for a single application. No prior knowledge of or experience with creating screen tutorials is required. We will provide training in our methods free of charge. We will also provide free access to the software necessary to capture and compress screen movies.

Here is the current list of software for which we are seeking tutorial development:

      EndNote (v. 10 when released)
      IDL
      LabView
      OneNote 2007
      Mathmatica
      Matlab
      Microsoft Project 2007
      Sakai
      SAS

This list will probably grow based on feedback we receive from customers and through surveying the market.

How might you benefit from being involved?

Atomic Learning pays for development work at a professional rate. In addition to that, there are other possible benefits to consider, such as:

  • receiving recognition for your work on the Atomic Learning site
  • having a venue for sharing your knowledge with college educators and students worldwide
  • having the opportunity to learn our method of creating movie tutorials, which could lead to other contract work with Atomic Learning or have application in your current job
  • increasing your skills in using software applications - you never really learn a program well until you teach it to others!

What do I need to provide?

Independent contract developers generally provide the following:

  • Computer
  • Access to the software that is the subject of the training

Atomic Learning will provide:

  • Use of screen capture and compression software
  • Use of microphone
  • Training in creating and compressing screen tutorials in the Atomic Learning style
  • Continuous support during the contract period
